“It costs you something to do good!” ~Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960)

We could not agree more with the quote above. A prolific Harlem Renaissance era author and poet, Zora Neale Hurston exemplified freethought in her writing that was well ahead of her time. And while there are many biographies about her life and work, we encourage you to read more on Hurston in Black Freethinkers: A History of African American Secularism, by Chris Cameron.
At BN, we continue to honor Hurston’s legacy with our support for education. We are proud to cosponsor the scholarship in her name with the Secular Student Alliance, which benefits student activists. There is still time to apply for this and many other scholarships on SSA’s website, but please do so by July 31st.
And while we do not think it should cost a whole lot to do good, even the smallest amount helps. We are still in our midyear fundraising drive, and we appreciate everyone who has donated so far. We need your support to achieve and even EXCEED our goal of $5,000 – can you get us there by July 31st?
This weekend, from July 25-27, we will be representing at NaNoCon in Nashville, TN. We are also preparing for DragonCon in Atlanta this coming Labor Day weekend, and much much more. In these very uncertain and even tumultuous times, we will continue our community engagement, support for education, and building a legacy for Black nonreligious voices for years to come – just like the iconic Zora Neale Hurston.
Please help us do good, even at a small cost. It goes a long way!
Sincerely,
Mandisa L. Thomas
