What is America’s 250th to our Community?

Greetings,

As we begin the month of July and witness the 250th “anniversary” of the United States, BN will continue to honor the part of our mission where we educate the general public on the history and current state of nonbelief in Black communities.

We are well aware that the very partisan Freedom 250 celebrations celebrate Christian Nationalism, and omit the indigenous, enslaved Africans (and their descendants), and even freed Blacks who built this country. And we can only hope that the official America 250 events will honor people like Benjamin BannekerFrederick Douglass (pictured above), and more.

However, at BN, we have NEVER waited for our stories to be told, and for our voices to be heard.

It’s one of the reasons why we joined with the Secular Coalition for America and our movement partners in reminding of the importance of separation of religion and government for this 250th anniversary.

It’s also why we will be discussing Independence Day, what it means to our community, and the impact on Black communities for our next live episode of In The Cut, on July 4th at 1 pm EST, which will feature our ChiTown affiliate leader and expert reparations activist, Cynthia McDonald. We invite you all to tune in for this important discussion.

This month also kicks off our annual summer fundraising drive. While we are still pushing for $50,000 for our 15th anniversary, achieving our $5-$10k summer goal will be vital for our midyear operations.

This July will be VERY busy, and we hope to see you at one of the many summer events that are taking place. And we continue to rely on your support for our work, which is very much appreciated.

America’s 250th anniversary belongs to us all. Let’s not forget and continue to work together for our future.

Sincerely,

Mandisa L. Thomas
