Greetings,
We have come to July 4th, 2024, which is a day that means different things to many different people. While for many it is a day of celebration, relaxation, and historical commemoration, for others, it is also a day of work and reflection of the work that is still needed in the United States.
It is important to remember that when the Declaration of Independence was adopted on this day in 1776, there were many who were excluded in the call for freedom, including enslaved Africans and their descendants, women, and the people who were indigenous to this part of the world. However, this is a day that should belong to ALL who have ever fought for justice and equality.
There are still some very important conversations and actions that need to take place, including reparations historically, and how we stand to lose even more rights if we do not do our civic duties as community members and constituents. Let’s take the time to educate ourselves and each other about what is at stake while also uplifting each other, and honoring those who are still being liberated from oppressively religious beliefs – many of which have informed institutional injustice against many people in this country.
So on this 4th day of July in 2024, whether you are relaxing, spending time with family/loved ones, or even working – take care, and remember what independence means, and what is at stake. We, the people, have the power, and we must use it.
Enjoy your day.
Sincerely,
