Greetings,
Here at Black Nonbelievers, we are currently embarked on our annual SeaCon convention. And on this Giving Tuesday, I would like to share some highlights and how your support makes an impact.
From our depature in Miami, FL to being aboard Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas, we have met attendees who have come from across the country – some who are traveling with their religious family members, yet are supporting them and are learning more about our community work. And they are expressing how wonderful the experience has been for them.
In our convention sessions so far, we’ve heard from abolitionist Kristie Puckett on how we can achieve true freedom in a society that focuses on punitive instead of restorative justice. Author and professor Chris Cameron shared his journey on becoming a Black atheist scholar after spending time in prison in his youth. Alfred “Dragnauct” Mimms educated us on how to better engage religious creationists, and Charone Pagett discussed how we can navigate our personal freedoms in the wake of Project 2025 and it’s extremely Christian Nationalist frame, which as we know, will target people of color, LGBTQIA+ citizens, and women.
On our last day, we will watch the documentary gODTalk, followed by a Q&A with Executive Producer Teddy Reeves and myself, and Chanel Reid with Compassion and Choices will offer resources on end of life care and preparation. And finally, Board Member Deana Williams will show how we are creating a more robust future for our organization, which we will share with all of you soon.
BN SeaCon is more than a fun adventure. It is education, care, community, support, and most important, activism. It is an important part of our work, which we demonstrate all throughout the year.
So on this Giving Tuesday, we kindly ask for your generous support. This will kick off our modest end of year goal of $5,000, which we can achieve with your help.
Once again, as we look to the coming months and the new year, things are uncertain and we are facing an uphill battle for our voices and our rights. But we are proud of our work, and will continue stand strong for those who need us, and work with our partner organizations as well. And as always we thank you, because we cannot do our important work without you.
Still. Building. Back Better.
Sincerely,
Mandisa L. Thomas
