Greetings,
In the midst of the holiday season and end of year campaign, I am pleased to share a new book to add to your library.
I remember being contacted and interviewed by Dr. Jason Shelton a few years ago when he began his research for his new book, The Contemporary Black Church. In addition to myself, he has shared the experiences of Black atheists in his analysis of the Black Church and the changing landscape of religion in Black communities.
Due to the still overwhelming presence of religiosity, some of the interviewees have chosen to remain anonymous. However, their stories are crucial in revealing the growth of nonbelief in Black communities, and the work that lies ahead.
I invite you all to get your copy of Dr. Shelton’s new book, which has been critically acclaimed by Henry Louis Gates Jr., Dr. Opal Lee, and Adelle Banks (from Religion News Service). It is available for purchase on a number of platforms, both in hard cover and ebook format. However, we chose to provide a link that would best support the author directly.
As we continue to ask for your crucial support at the end of 2024, we are looking to 2025 with cautious optimism, and how we will continue our important community work. In addition to our ongoing work, we are pleased to bring you our very first Revival of Reason in the Atlanta, GA area. This “homecoming” will feature speakers, workshops, social networking, and community service opportunities that will show the power of secular activism, especially as we grow in the spaces where we are needed. Student discounts and sponsorship opportunities are available for this event. Registration and hotel booking are available here.
The Revival of Reason is more than an event. It is also how we must continue our practice, our fight, and our commitments in the years to come. And here at BN, we are on the front lines of tis work, and your support is needed.
We hope that you enjoy the rest of the holiday season. Please take time to recharge, spend time with loved ones, and support the causes and organizations that work hard on our behalf.
Thank you for your commitment to community building and change.
Sincerely,
Mandisa L. Thomas
