Thankful for YOU

“Let’s all give thanks, where thanks Is due

Not to Religion, not to a God

But to the PEOPLE who make the world a better place

For ME and YOU”

There are some of the lyrics to Dan Barker’s song “Let’s All Give Thanks”, which was performed at the debut of Godless Gospel at the 45th annual convention for the Freedom From Religion Foundation. I have the distinct honor of being a part of this project, which was conceptualized by Dan over 30 years ago, and was given a very soulful life and sound by creative director Andre Forbes.

Godless Gospel is personally important to me because a few years ago, Dan contacted me about his idea and asked if I knew of any former gospel musicians and/or producers. And I had the pleasure of connecting him to Andre, who found BN after a painful deconversion from religion and the gospel music world. The result is what you see in the video debut, with more to come.

Some of you may ask, why is this important? Because Black Nonbelievers not only provides community, representation, and support for a still small but growing demographic, we are also creating opportunities for our members and partners alike to make history with groundbreaking material and expand on the artistry that was once thought to be relegated to religious communities. While the word “gospel” has taken on a religious context, it simply means “good story” at its root. And what better way to spread OUR good stories through music that can be enjoyed by many.

This is a huge part of the community AND liberation work that we are proud to bring to you. Which is still very much needed. And speaking of need, we are looking for more voices to fill our ensemble, so please submit your audition to the Godless Gospel website or share with anyone who may be interested.

The 2022 holiday season is upon us, and I want to thank you all once again for your generous support throughout the year. Also, Giving Tuesday is November 29th, and I would once again like to ask for your consideration for Black Nonbelievers.  Together, we are STILL changing lives, for the better.

Have a safe, secular, and joyous season.

Sincerely,
